  8. A free press is a vanguard to a free society.  In a free country, 
  9. the press must be free to inform, and educate, the citizens about 
  10. the workings of the government, so that abuses may be stopped, and 
  11. good deeds may be applauded. 
  12.  
  13. It is impossible for every citizen to, on their own, investigate 
  14. all the happenings in the world, so they must rely on the media to 
  15. investigate and report on the issues and events that will affect 
  16. the population at large. 
  17.  
  18. Ideally, the media should be motivated solely by the desire to 
  19. report the events, as they happen and without bias, for the purpose 
  20. of ensuring that the public will be well informed.  We have a free 
  21. press in America, but we do not have such an altruistic press.  The 
  22. media is motivated by a variety of factors, and it seems that 
  23. keeping the public informed is the least important.  Profit must 
  24. be, by far, the most important consideration.  Print what sells, 
  25. televise what sells.  Because of their desire to create huge 
  26. profits, the media has become highly competitive.  Competition can 
  27. be a good thing but in this case, the public suffers.  In the hopes 
  28. of getting a good lead on a story, the press is inclined to 
  29. cooperate, and grant favors, to anyone who offers information to 
  30. them.  If a police department spokesman, for example, promises a 
  31. reporter an exclusive lead on a story, providing the reporter 
  32. refrains from releasing information the police don't want released, 
  33. well, it is nearly assured that the reporter will remain silent.

  35. It sometimes happens that the media suffers from overly-good 
  36. intentions.  They are inclined to crusade for causes that are 
  37. popular, whether or not they are well thought out.  And the media 
  38. is completely unqualified to present most of the issues that it 
  39. covers.  After all, they are reporters, photographers, writers, 
  40. personalities.  They are not economists, scientists or engineers. 
  41. It is hard, if not impossible, to present an accurate view of a 
  42. situation, when the reporter really has no understanding of that 
  43. situation.

  45. The media insists that they are "giving the people what they want." 
  46. How many of you want hour upon hour of O.J. Simpson coverage, on 
  47. a daily basis?  Didn't think so.  The media controls what is 
  48. available, and the public takes what it is offered.  That makes the 
  49. public responsible, as well, for allowing the media to get away 
  50. with this.

  52. It is broken, and badly in need of being fixed.  The media will not fix 
  53. their own problems.  It is unlikely that they even see that there is 
  54. a problem.  We, the people, must become involved.  We must monitor the 
  55. media, just as they are supposed to monitor the events that they report 
  56. on.  We must educate ourselves, so that we can understand the issues 
  57. and events that the media reports.  We must be vigilant, and speak 
  58. loudly whenever we find the media to be abusing, either maliciously or 
  59. thorough ignorance, their power.  We must force them to report facts, 
  60. not agendas.  We must be tireless, and undertake this task as though 
  61. our very liberty depends on it.  For it does.  Should we choose to allow 
  62. them to continue to spoon-feed us, then soon we will have no desire for 
  63. them to stop.  Nor will we have the power that will enable us to make  
  64. them stop.
